Complete Independance Without Grid Power
To function with all the modern day electrical components in a common household, and to do so by completely generating all your own power, may be far –fetched to some, but it is very doable and reliable if done correctly. First we must understand how the supply and demand process works with electrical loads. As a load (motor) uses power, it requires a short boost or surge to get it up to speed. This required surge is typically very short, 1-3 seconds. After the motor has completed its start up, it continues along at what is called “running” power. Generally speaking the brief surge in the beginning requires 2-3 times the amount of power it takes to run the motor. This is very important knowledge when designing an “off-grid” system. The next step is to look at all the desired electrical loads collectively. What motors will be on for how long and how often, will determine the size of the alternative energy system.
In order to provide stable, continuous power required by A.C. (alternative current) motors both day and night, a storage component must be available. As D.C. (direct current)) power is generated by solar modules, wind turbines etc. it fluctuates depending on sun availability, wind speed etc. To replace the storage component that would be the grid itself, we use a collection of batteries. The batteries provide the stable power supply needed by your appliances (motors) while allowing a fluctuating “recharge” rate to be supplied by the alternative energy components. Finally a backup generator will be integrated to take care of any deficiencies and /or any excess loads that may occur. This balancing of incoming D.C. power as a charging mechanism and outgoing A.C. power to all the loads requires knowledge and experience for a proper design and installation.
